Talking Vision is Vision Australia Radio’s flagship program, discussing the latest news and issues from a blindness and low vision perspective.

For this week’s show we bring you the second part of a two-part series featuring participants in the upcoming Last Seen exhibition, taking place from 18 to 29 April in Brisbane.

Following on from Jane Britt on last week’s program, this week you’ll hear from public speaker, entrepreneur and UN youth disability advocate Santiago Velasquez who joins the show along with artist Kathleen O’Hagan.

The Last Seen exhibition is a multisensory exhibit featuring the last or most cherished memories of 10 participants who are blind or have low vision.

Santiago and Kathleen worked together with composer Dr Catherine Likhuta to produce his piece ‘Carefree’, depicting his favourite memory of riding bikes with his friends as a nine-year-old through the streets of his hometown in Colombia.

For Santiago ‘Carefree’ represents not only a special time in his life, but also the freedom to pursue great things and create new long-lasting memories, like graduating from university, starting a business, attending the UN and more.

“At the end of the day you’re the one who chooses what you end up doing, what you want to do in life, all of that is up to you," Santiago said.

“This piece just really demonstrates that irrelevant of what you want and irrelevant of your abilities, nobody else can set your destiny other than yourself,” he said.
