An appointment with an eye specialist can be daunting, particularly if you have only recently experienced changes to your vision or the changes are significant.

Vision Australia Orthoptist Khoa Nguyen shares some advice to help you gain the most from your visit.

Plan ahead

It’s important to be prepared for your consultation.

Before your appointment, note any symptoms you are experiencing and make a list of things you are concerned about. If you have a long list of questions ask for a longer consultation so you don’t feel rushed.

Have someone with you

You might feel more comfortable having someone close with you at the consultation. This person may be someone who solely listens and provides emotional support or, if you are anxious, may help prompt any discussion you might be too anxious to bring up. It can also be useful to have someone to help you remember important information later and ask other questions.

Take your time

The time you have booked with the eye specialist is your time even if the clinic seems hectic or busy. Don’t feel rushed and make sure you take the time to address all of your concerns. Also feel free to ask as many questions as you want even if those questions seem insignificant.

Get the facts

Don’t be hesitant to double check any information you receive during the consultation and make sure you leave understanding your situation.

If your vision loss is caused by a particular condition make sure you get the name of the condition. This will make it easier to seek further help and information and explain to people any changes you may face. It’s also important to find out if your condition is hereditary so you can inform family members to get their eyes checked.

Also discuss your prognosis with your eye specialist. Ask them how your vision loss will affect your life in the future and understand any long-term implications.

By the end of the consultation

The eye specialist is there to help you understand your vision loss. Make sure you come away from your appointment knowing your diagnosis and prognosis, having all of your questions answered.
