Blind adventurer climbs Machu Picchu
12 May 2009

The journey aims to raise awareness around sight loss and generate funds for services in the UK.
A few months ago, we brought you the inspirational story of Cathy Birchall, a blind adventurer from the UK on a motorbike journey around the world with her partner Bernard. The Enfield office were paid a visit in mid-March.
The latest update is that Cathy, Bernard and their bike Bertha are riding through the mountains of Peru where they have encountered hail storms and snow flurries.
"The ride through the mountains of Peru was hard on the bike (and us!) Talk about shake rattle and roll - we broke the pannier frames and had to have them welded again - for the third time!"
Cathy is thrilled to be the first blind person to climb the ten-hour return trip up Wynapicchu (The Young Mountain) at Machu Picchu, which she described as "real tough like nothing ever experienced before".
On completing her journey, Cathy will become the first person who is blind to circumnavigate the world on a motorcycle.
